The Most Expensive

Art & Football: Big Business

What would you buy with $250 million?
Would you invest it in a painting or maybe in two football players for your team?

In 2011, the Qatar family acquired one of Cezanne’s paintings from his series “The Card Players” for the amount of $250 million. It’s now considered the most expensive painting ever sold!

In 2009, the Spanish football club; Real Madrid, acquired Cristiano Ronaldo for the amount of $117 million. Cristiano was the most expensive player ever transferred in football history at that time. However; after a long negotiation this summer, Real Madrid agreed to pay $132 million for the Welsh player Gareth Bale from the English Premier League team, Tottenham Hotspur; setting a new record for the most expensive football player in history.

For many reasons, I find the business of art & football very similar. Although football can be ephemeral, the way business is done is very similar demonstrating that sometimes value isn’t a link to quality. The value of a painting in an auction is not really the value of the panting. It’s the value between two people bidding against each other because they want THE painting. Similarly, this happens at a football draft between two clubs bidding against each other for a football player that they really want. At the end of the day, it is not about the art or the football player; it’s about making a statement.

In this painting, I tried to combine both scenarios in one.  I display the setting from Cezanne’s most expensive painting: ‘The Card Players’, replacing the original faces of the card players, for the most expensive football players in history; Cristiano Ronaldo (on the left) and Gareth Bale (on the right)

What's your opinion?

El Clasico

In this video, Betirri shows the creation process of ‘El Clasico’ from 'The Futbol Series'. Drawing from Renaissance Era styles, he gives the background a hint of light and depth. On the uniforms, he uses the 'chiaroscuro' technique to make this painting even more dramatic, which allows the juxtaposition of the players to depict a staple of Spanish football history.
El Clásico (English: The Classic, Catalan: El Clàssic), is the name given in football to a match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. It is contested twice a year in the Spanish La Liga competition, and more often if the clubs meet in other competitions.

Great moments of Inter, Brazil by Reebok

ON DEC. 2011, FIVE PAINTINGS WERE MADE FOR REEBOK BRAZIL TO CELEBRATE FIVE FOOTBALL TITLES OF SPORT CLUB INTERNACIONAL FROM PORTO ALEGRE, BRAZIL.
Each painting portrays a historical moment that led to each one of the victories of this remarkable team. These were
published in a Brazilian newspaper (Zero Hora) and were sponsored by Reebok:
”On Friday (Dec. 30) a multi-page special insert was published in the newspaper Zero Hora, Porto Alegre,
with scenes of the club's centenary major victories, including the Libertadores and World Club Cup. The images
were produced by Mexican artist Betirri Bengtson. Done by hand, this work is already being considered a
collector's item.”

2010 Bayou City Art Festival

From the 26 - 28 of March 2010, I had the opportunity to participate in one of the best ten art festivals around the U.S. I was one out of 300 artists elected for this festival. It was a great experience and a total success! The weather was beautiful and the three days were packed! It was my first time participating in one of these festivals and I decided to design my own booth. The booth was designed and built by me and my good friend Michael Ta, who I thank a lot! Here are some pictures of the event.
